Auditions

The Waltham Symphony Orchestra is a high-level civic orchestra comprised of professional musicians as well as highly talented students and amateur players.

The orchestra usually rehearses the week of the concert. Typically, when the performance is a Saturday evening, the orchestra rehearses Wedneseday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 p.m.

The rehearsals usually take place at the Kennedy Middle School in Waltham. The Friday night rehearsal is a dress rehearsal and takes place on stage at the auditorium.

Because of the limited rehearsal time, the musicians arrive to the first rehearsal with parts already practiced. The parts are available on-line when feasible or sent to the players in advance of the concert.

Presently, many of the WSO players are volunteers. The positions with stipend include all principal positions as well as some string positions.

For the 2009-2010 Season, we are auditioning for the following positions:

1. First Violin, third chair (2 positions)

2. Second Violin, second chair

3. Second Violin, third chair

4. Doublebass, fourth chair

5. Flute, substitute, possibly third flute

6. Oboe, substitute, possibly third oboe

7. Bassoon, third, possibly contrabassoon

8. Horn, Principal (stipend position)

9. Horn, third

10. Substitute (all sections).
