Although technically it was part of a 2007-2008, the Inaugural Concert of the Waltham Symphony Orchestra took place on May 10, 2008 and was the only concert of that season. Originally, the season had been planned with two concerts, the inaugural one being in March 2008. However, due to various reasons, it was decided that the first concert of the WSO would instead take place in May 2008.

SEASON 2007-2008

THE INAUGURAL CONCERT

For the first concert of his orchestra, Patrick Botti decided to conduct a repertoire  spanning more than two centuries.

The concert started with the “Cosi Fan Tutte” Overture by Mozart. It was followed by Maurice Ravel’s “Suite de Ma Mère l’Oye” (Mother Goose Suite), a piece dear to Maestro Botti, one of the works that has influenced his conducting career).

Following were two pieces for oboe solo and orchestra: the first one was the rarely played but delightful “Fantaisie sur des Thèmes Populaires Français” (Fantasy on French Popular Themes) by Vincent d’Indy and the second was the “Nocturne pour hautbois et cordes” (Nocturne for oboe and strings) by Daniel Lesur. The composer had given its original parts to Patrick Botti back in 1981 while directing the Concilium Musicum  in Paris. Maestro Botti conducted the American premiere of the work in the US with the French Symphony of Boston. For this inaugural concert of the WSO, Patrick Botti invited  Amy Dinsmore, principal oboe of the Symphony as the guest soloist.

Finally, the concert concluded with the magnificent Third Symphony by Johannes Brahms.
